Christina: An Inspiring ‘Expert by Experience’
How Christina’s Involvement Came About
Christina, a person supported at our Accomplish Supported Living Service in Horsham has always been passionate about raising awareness of hidden disabilities. A couple of years ago, while completing her pre-health assessment questionnaire for her Annual Health Check, Christina was asked: “Is there anything more you would like to discuss with your GP?”
Christina’s response was both heartfelt and insightful:
“I wonder if they are aware of hidden disabilities and how this affects people.”
Christina, who has been diagnosed with Dyspraxia, explained that her disability isn’t always visible, and many might not realise she has one. This sparked an important conversation about raising awareness of hidden disabilities. Inspired by her perspective, the idea was born to involve Christina in training support staff to provide insights from the point of view of the people they support.
Together, Christina, her support team, and Sam Kelly, Regional Trainer, explored ways for her to share her experiences and knowledge, ultimately shaping Cristina’s journey into becoming an ‘Expert by Experience.’
The Application Process
Sam Kelly engaged with the Learning & Development team to propose Christina’s involvement in staff training. After several discussions, Christina met with Sam to explore her role in delivering NAPPI (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention) training, particularly the “green sections” focusing on caring community, productivity, and high-quality relaxation.
Over a series of meetings, Christina shared her thoughts and demonstrated her comfort speaking in front of groups. With the support of the L&D team, Christina officially joined the training team, completing the same induction and online courses undertaken by support staff.
Supporting Christina in Her Role
Christina plays a vital role in NAPPI training sessions, co-delivering the green sections alongside Sam Kelly. Each session is carefully planned, with Christina and Sam collaborating on how to approach the content together.
To ensure Christina’s independence, her travel arrangements are fully supported
, with pre-booked taxis enabling her to attend training venues on her own. After each session, Christina returns home full of enthusiasm, eager to share her experiences with her housemates and support staff.
Christina finds immense joy in her role, saying:
“I love doing the training because I feel like I’m helping people, and I like to do that.”
Christina’s Impact
Christina’s involvement as an ‘Expert by Experience’ highlights the importance of lived experience in training and developing support staff. By sharing her story and unique perspective, she is helping build a more informed, empathetic, and supportive care environment.
